As Halloween approaches, my braces and I are considering all of the candies I cannot have. Being an adult in braces, Halloween has trickled from dressing up to Trick or Treat through the neighborhood to chilling with a couple friends and popping in The Addams Family for a mini marathon while passing out candy. Where ever you are in life with braces, here are a few tips to keep you, and your teeth, happy and healthy this Halloween season.
After you have filled up your bags from trick or treating, grab a group of friends (or siblings) for a candy swap party!! Be fair, and have fun, but definitely try to get rid of that sticky chewy candy you know should avoid! Pop in a spooky Halloween movie in the background and see what goodies you all got from the different houses you visited through the night. I don’t know about you, but I’d feel pretty awesome walking off with my friends Reese’s and M&M’s! J
If you have a child in braces, or know that many of their friends do, consider picking up some braces friendly candy and treats to pass out this year. When your kids come home with bags full of candy, sort through it with them dividing into two piles, one to keep and eat and the other pile to donate or swap with others who do not have braces. Even that can be a battle though…no one wants to give away their candy mountain! Thankfully, there are many dentists who participate in a Halloween Candy Buy-Back which can offer kids healthier alternatives to candy and keeps them from feeling left out of all the Halloween fun! It is common for offices who host the candy buy back, to donate the sweet treats to the troops overseas, so they can have a little Halloween fun too! That is something we can all feel good about!
No matter where you find yourself this Halloween, keep in mind that oral hygiene is key! Staying on top of brushing will keep cavities, white stains and plaque off your teeth and keep your smile bright and cheery for upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays! No one wants to get fillings for Christmas!!
Happy, and safe, Trick-or-Treating!
